JC Barre Teacher Spotlight: Laura Miller
Laura has been a part of the JC Barre family since its inception. Her HipFit class is a favorite among the JC Barre members. You can catch Laura every Monday night and Saturday morning!
Laura has been a Jersey City resident since graduating from Penn State in 2005. Dance was always been something she loved, whether training or just enjoying the occasional night out, but she didn’t have a real outlet for it in her life as an adult. She grew up taking dance classes twice a week at a school in Hunterdon County, NJ (ballet, tap, jazz, modern/lyrical, and hip hop) from age 4 until 18.
As an adult she started taking Zumba classes and while she enjoyed the non-stop Dance fitness element, she thought she could make it more her own. HipFit was born shortly after!
How long have you been teaching HipFit?
Laura: I started teaching HipFit in June or July of 2014. I teach out of Grassroots Community Space 4x a week, and am so thankful to JC Barre Studio for giving me the opportunity to teach here when they were first opening!
Do you teach any other type of fitness classes or programs?
Laura: I don’t, though I do offer separately scheduled private parties and group breakdown classes aimed at answering choreo questions and teaching class sequences in more detail.
Do you have another career focus other than fitness? If so please share.
Laura: I have my own hand lettering business called Letter By Laura (give it a follow on instagram @letterbylaura). I offer pretty penmanship and type-based signage for businesses, Home decor, and events. You may have seen my work around town at Hamilton Inn, South House, Gringo’s, Uncle Momo...to name a few. In addition to that, I’m a commercial Voiceover actor.
Why do you love teaching the ladies at JC Barre?
Laura: JC Barre has a nice sense of camaraderie and i love the mix of familiar faces and newcomers just looking to give dance fitness a try! It’s always a judgment free and welcoming space.
What do you enjoy doing on your down time?
Laura: What’s down time? Haha... well, it’s not very exciting, but I love a casual dinner party or movie night with friends. I have a bulldog named Burger I try to spoil with cuddles as often as possible, and certainly enjoy the occasional night out around town, though I try to stay in on Fridays to avoid that dreaded Saturday am class hangover :)
